Claw vacuum pumps

The claw vacuum pumps from Becker work according to the positive displacement principle. Comparable to Becker's trusted rotary vane vacuum pumps, our claw pumps are recognised as a dependable choice for demanding environments where efficiency and consistency are critical.

The compression of the dry claw pumps is 100% oil-free and contact-free. To achieve this, two claw-like rotors rotate in opposite directions within the compression chamber without touching each other or the housing.

This makes these positive displacement pumps particularly low maintenance. The claw technology ensures high efficiency, and the low installed motor power ensures low energy consumption. With our focus on environmentally friendly technology, our products ensure sustainable production in numerous industrial processes.

VARIAIR

At Becker, our VARIAIR unit combines a claw vacuum pump with variable speed drive technology (VSD). This system features an integrated frequency inverter that allows the pump to operate flexibly between 30 Hz and 60 Hz.

With VARIAIR, you can increase your volume flow by up to 20% when using a 50 Hz supply network.

The inverter adjusts the motor speed to precisely match the volume flow requirements, ensuring that energy use is optimised and pressure is maintained even when demand fluctuates. This maximises efficiency and helps reduce energy costs.

FAQ

A claw style vacuum pump is a type of industrial vacuum pump that uses a contactless, positive-displacement mechanism to create vacuum or low pressure. This innovative design delivers high efficiency and durability while keeping maintenance minimal.

The working principle of a dry claw vacuum pump involves claw-shaped rotors rotating without contact, creating a vacuum or low pressure with minimal energy loss and 100% wear free operation, while maintaining low noise levels for a safe and comfortable working environment. This ensures long-term reliability and cost savings in industrial operations.

A robust, air-cooled design means they are low-maintenance and energy-efficient. Because they compress without contact, use less motor power, and can be fitted with frequency inverter technology.

Dry claw pumps are best suited for rough vacuum applications, though they are not recommended for fine vacuum use. For more examples and further details on applications, please see the "Markets and Applications" section on this page.

Operating both cleanly and sustainably, the claw pump is ideal for industries requiring contamination-free vacuum processes, such as food processing, electronics, and medical applications.

"Oil-free" means that these pumps operate without the use of oil as a seal in the compression chamber. This has several advantages and technical backgrounds:

Technical significance:

  • No oil in the compression chamber
Unlike oil-lubricated vacuum pumps, the compression process is carried out dry. The rotating claws do not touch each other and operate without contact, which means that no lubrication is required within the compression area.
  • Lubrication only outside
If lubrication is necessary (e.g. for bearings and gears), it is carried out in separate areas outside the compression chamber so that no oil can enter the gas or air flow.

Advantages:

  • Contamination-free operation
Prevents oil from entering the process or the vacuum system, which is particularly important in industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals and electronics.
  • Low maintenance requirements
No oil changes required in the compression chamber, which reduces maintenance requirements and costs.
  • Environmentally friendly
Reduces oil consumption and the disposal of used oil.
  • Suitable for sensitive applications
Ideal for applications that require high purity or a contamination-free environment, such as in laboratories or medical technology.

Becker’s dry claw vacuum pumps are known for their contactless operation, reducing wear and extending service life. Features like the VARIAIR variable speed drive optimise energy efficiency, making them versatile and reliable for any industrial vacuum pump requirement. Thanks to their versatility, they are suitable for numerous applications where a dry and efficient vacuum is required.

Becker industrial vacuum pumps are perfect for vacuum fixing, pick & place, evacuation, and pneumatic conveying. They’re used in industries like packaging, woodworking, electronics, plastics, and environmental applications such as wastewater treatment.

  • Food processing (e.g. vacuum packaging, evacuation of containers and thermoforming of packaging films)
  • Wood industry (e.g. vacuum clamping on CNC machines)
  • Medical and environmental technology (e.g. laboratory vacuum, wastewater treatment)
  • Electronics industry (e.g. precise handling and assembly)

With a VARIAIR frequency inverter from Becker, the speed and therefore, performance of the claw vacuum pump can be flexibly adapted to the application requirements. A frequency inverter reduces energy costs and ensures more precise operation. Ideal for fluctuating demand, e.g. in packaging technology.

This results in energy cost savings and extends the service life of the vacuum pump, with our customers saving up to 30% in energy costs compared with other pump types.

Claw pumps belong to the group of positive displacement pumps. Depending on the type of application, claw vacuum pumps generate a vacuum, for example in pick & place applications, while claw compressors generate an overpressure, for example in the form of compressed air for printers.

The service life can be maximised by the following measures:

  • Inspection and cleaning of the intake filter.
The transparent filter housing is exclusive to Becker and makes visual inspection particularly easy. The greatly enlarged filter surface also extends the maintenance intervals.
  • Operation in a clean environment to minimise contamination.

  • Use of a frequency inverter to reduce the load on the motor.

  • Use of Becker spare parts for maintenance work.
